The cap of the vacuum pump has pulled it’s rivets and is now sitting off the housing. It can be fixed up quite easily with some M5 bolts and sealant, BUT as you may be able to see in the picture, there is a fair smattering of oil around the housing, and it drips out after running. The pump is the mechanical ‘always on’ type so it creates a vacuum even when not necessary, so due to the amount of oil evacuated I would assume that the piston is letting the oil past quite easily and should be replaced?

Finding the internals for these pumps is quite a trick, so it would require a whole new pump at £130, rather than the bolts and sealant job at £3. As I need the vehicle for Monday, and tomorrow is the last day the parts shop is open, I have ordered a new pump regardless and will be picking it up in the morning. Is oil into the brake servo so bad? Fix or replace? WWYD?

You really ought not to have any oil in the brake servo, as the vacuum is running the opposite way and on release you get air into the brake servo from the engine compartment instead. That being said, it wouldn’t be good. The sort of leak that tends to kill a brake servo is usually a master cylinder, but with either oil or glycol it’s not really a resistant rubber in there.

I wonder how it came to pop its rivets? If the internal valving failed, then it might have tried to pressurize itself instead, in which case both of your negatives would be in play - oil in the servo, and internal problems not fixed by sticking it back together.

Then again, it may have just done a Volkswagen and come loose in a totally ordinary way. I have a vague memory of some trouble with the vacuum on mine, but the details are lost to time. I’d say wipe it out, see if the valves seem okay, and reassemble.

It’s done a Land Rover and come loose in a Wabco sort of way, a fairly well documented ‘should’ve been on a service bulettin’ sort of way.

Well in that case I’ll replace the whole unit. At least it’ll keep the servo happy, as there was no trace of oil in the vacuum tube and the internals of the servo look clean.

Cheers oh Land Rover Oracle.

Best off having no servo anything clearly. This is a joke - no power anything on the Rover or FERD, but the giant three ton Lincoln... The Lincoln has as many turns lock to lock of the wheel as a Rover, but with much sharper final wheel positions, so it’s nearly half again as quick, and it has an iron 7L engine sitting right on top of those wheels. Turning the steering while stationary with no power is very, very hard. The brakes... no thanks on that either.

The Series obviously has no power steering, but it’s currently sitting on skinny truck tyres so it’s not too much of a ball-ache. That said, I am considering putting the current Defender wheels and tyres on it to make it a little more road friendly, but I worry that with a 1.2 tonne (! galvy weighs A LOT) chassis and fatter rubber it may lead me to have a bad time when attempting 3-pointers, or even general movement in the forward direction because - ya know - 60ish horsepower.

That old Lincoln has a 7ltr? Same as the Galaxie?

I don’t know what Cheez Whiz is and I don’t really want to find out, especially when they have to state that it is in fact made from real cheese.

On normal Cheez Whiz I agree, but this stuff is worth the arterial/intestinal damage.

The Lincoln’s currently on garbage scavenged 14" tires - it’s *going* to be on giant 32" 950 section bias plies. As tall as most Rover tires and wider. As to the engine:

Not the same engine - better than some Galaxies and worse than others. It’s a 430 MEL, which had a version later in the ‘60s all the way up to 462, which can be bored to 477 or more. The MEL was a sister engine to the FE series (of which the 427 was one) but different in some respects. Slant deck, different exhaust spacing. It breathes better than some stock configurations of the 427 and the original 390, and was a bit higher compression (10:1 stock) than all but performance versions thereof. High precision engine, too - something like a .005" bore clearance.

Nice engine, but all iron and heavy.
